Breville Barista Pro vs De'Longhi Magnifica Start
These machines serve completely different purposes. The Magnifica Start is a super-automatic — it grinds, brews, and steams with no technique required. The Barista Pro is a semi-automatic that demands manual involvement at each step. At the same rough price point ($699 vs $899), the choice is entirely about whether you want to learn espresso or just have coffee appear. They are not interchangeable products.

The De'Longhi Magnifica Start costs $699 and automates the entire process: grind, dose (capped around 10g), tamp, brew, and milk foam through the LatteCrema system. Push a button and get a drink. Its steel burr grinder produces consistent grind, and the machine requires almost no coffee knowledge to operate daily. The build is largely plastic, which is typical for super-automatics at this price.
The Barista Pro costs $899 and requires you to grind, dose, tamp, pull the shot, and steam milk manually. The LCD timer and 30 grind settings give you tools to improve, but you have to engage with each variable. If that sounds tedious rather than interesting, the Barista Pro is the wrong machine.
Espresso quality differs meaningfully. The Barista Pro, operated with decent technique, can produce noticeably better shots than the Magnifica Start — more crema, better extraction, fuller flavor. The Magnifica Start produces consistent but limited espresso, constrained by its small dose and sealed system. It's not a machine you can tweak your way to better shots.
Longevity also differs. Semi-automatics like the Barista Pro tend to last longer than super-automatics because they have fewer moving parts and no milk circuit to clog and maintain. The Magnifica Start needs regular internal cleaning to avoid flavor degradation and mechanical issues.
Choose the Magnifica Start if convenience is the only criterion and coffee is fuel. Choose the Barista Pro if you have any interest in the craft of espresso. These are different products solving different problems.
