The Baratza Virtuoso+ ($249) and Fellow Ode Gen 2 ($399) serve genuinely different brewing purposes. The Virtuoso+ covers the full range from espresso to french press with its 40mm conical burrs and 40 grind settings. The Ode Gen 2, by contrast, stops at filter and pour-over — it cannot grind fine enough for espresso. If you need one grinder for all brew methods, the Virtuoso+ wins by default.
Grind quality at their respective sweet spots tells a more balanced story. The Ode Gen 2's flat 64mm burrs produce exceptional uniformity for drip, Chemex, and french press. The Virtuoso+ performs well across its range but its 40mm burrs are smaller than the Ode's 64mm plates. For dedicated filter brewing, the Ode's larger flat burrs offer a real edge in cup clarity and texture.
Practically speaking, the Ode Gen 2 is lighter at 2.0kg versus the Virtuoso+'s 2.8kg, and its single-dose hopper holds only 60g compared to the Virtuoso+'s 230g hopper. If you brew espresso at home, the Ode is not a viable option. If you brew exclusively filter coffee and want the best grind quality at this price tier, the Ode Gen 2 is worth the $150 premium.
